Cold, dark basements, unheated garages, and unused rooms. These are the places you might find dedicated cyclists at this time of year spinning away for hours. They are getting ready for the gravel and back road events that they have signed up for. Maybe it is because they have little time for training in a busy schedule, but more often than not, it is because they are following a structured training regime, or……the weather just plain sucks at this time of year!
Whatever the reasons, the time invested now into the drudgery of “rides to nowhere” is an investment that should pave the way toward better fitness and results later on. Here’s a salute to you determined individuals spinning away in darkened corners all over the country.

Regardless of the hours I spend on the trainer, and the programs I follow, it never replicates the road from quality of workout. The longer I spend indoors, the harder it is outdoors once I’m back out there. I try to keep indoor spinning to no longer than two weeks without a ride outside (and some hills to boot!).
