Fresh Gravel: Pedal iSSi is a new brand of clipless pedals introduced to the market in 2014 by the cycling distribution company, Quality Bicycle Products in Bloomington, Minnesota. Featuring a familiar look, the pedals originally were produced with their own specific cleat. However; new for 2015, the iSSi Triple and Trail models have a Shimano cross-compatible cleat design. Here are the salient features, as seen on Pedal iSSi’s website, for our “Triple” test model:

- ⋅ Minimalist aluminum pedal body and chromoly spindle, 316g/pair- (Note: Our test pair weighs 320 grams)
- ⋅ Three sealed cartridge axle bearings for a smooth, durable ride
- ⋅ 4° float, 14.6° angle of release, adjustable spring tension
- ⋅ Available in standard 52.2mm spindle length
- ⋅ Spindle and small parts rebuild kits available
- ⋅ Cross compatible with iSSi, Shimano SPD and Wellgo 98A cleats
- ⋅ Includes one pair of iSSi cleats
The Pedal iSSi Triple is available in nine colors and MSRP on the pedals is $85.00USD. A spindle kit to rebuild the Triple model, if necessary, would be $52.00USD.
Other updatess for the 2015 model pedals include a refined retention claw to attain a more consistent and even release point. The redesign also decreases the retention release angle from the older 20° to 15°, which is more in line with other popular clipless pedal types. The new retention claws have also undergone a new heat treating process which lengthens the service life of the pedal.
A new spring design also has been employed which provides the rider with a better feel and a consistent ramp up in tension. Pedal iSSi claims the pedal has an audible and very tactile click in when engaged which should reassure the rider that they are ready to hammer the pedals without fear of not being completely engaged.
