Gravel Grinder News: PRO Introduces New 2020 Gravel Components & Accessories – by MG

PRO Bike Gear introduced a number of new components and accessories for gravel and all-road bikes today at the Eurobike trade show in Germany. As many of you will recall, PRO is Shimano’s component and accessory brand, and their Discover gravel line sees significant expansion for 2020.

Highlights include: a new 27.2mm internally-routed dropper post with 70mm of drop and drop bar-specific lever options; new carbon handlebars and seatposts that promise a smoother ride; an off-road version of the company’s popular Stealth saddle; and new Discover frame, seat and handlebar bags.

Here’s the announcement from PRO, with photos from the recent Shimano GRX press event in Columbia Falls, Montana:

Following its introductory year, PRO expanded its Discover gravel-specific product line with elite-level composite components. Now equipping gravel riders with higher end options in the PRO Discover line, the new lightweight Discover Carbon Handlebar features a light and robust carbon layup that balances strength and compliance. The Discover Carbon Handlebar features an ergonomically shaped top section with a 5-degree backsweep to provide extra comfort no matter the distance. The new handlebar also has a 20-degree flare for additional stability off road. The new Discover Carbon Handlebar was designed specifically to seamlessly integrate with new Shimano GRX shift (ST) levers, optimizing ergonomics for the cockpit, as well as providing both stealth Di2 wire routing while also supporting mechanical ST levers. The new handlebars start at 205g with a 75mm reach, 110mm drop and are available in widths of 40, 42, 44cm.

Stealth saddle line new offers MTB option

A new Stealth Off-Road saddle joins the Stealth saddle line for 2020. Following the introduction of the Stealth Superlight saddle, released earlier this year, the Stealth range now includes four elite-level snub-nose designs. The Stealth Off-Road helps mountain bikers (ed: and presumably gravel cyclists) maximize power in aggressive riding positions while remaining comfortable and durable. The Stealth Off-Road saddle’s wide nose area and dual-density super light EVA padding provides support where mountain bikers need it along with a wide, anatomically-perfected sitting area (142mm or 152mm options) for pressure relief on the sit bones. The saddle is extra durable and utilizes stainless steel seat rails to withstand the rigors of modern trail riding. The Stealth Off-Road saddle weighs 195g.

New Discover gravel/adventure cycling bags

PRO expands its Discover bag line with three new models for 2020. The new Discover Bottle Bag has a quick one-handed closure function and adjustable straps for multiple mounting positions. A new Discover Small Frame Bag debuts that provides storage in the front of the frame triangle. To complete the range, a new Discover Seat Bag is now available.

New Stems and Seatposts

PRO Discover Dropper Post
With 70mm of travel, internal cable routing and a gravel-friendly 27.2mm diameter, the new Discover Dropper Post lets you get the saddle out of the way for shreddin’ the gnar. Photo: MG

Joining the new PRO dropper posts introduced in 2018 comes a new alloy Discover Dropper Seatpost with 70mm of travel, a 27.2mm diameter and internal cable routing for gravel bikes. The post also integrates with Shimano components, as it can be operated by a new drop handlebar Dropper Seatpost Remote, or by Shimano’s GRX ST-RX810-LA STI lever. The Discover Dropper Seatpost comes in one specification weighing 417g with a 350mm long body and 0mm setback. The Discover Dropbar Seatpost Remote offers unique benefits previously unseen in dropper post activation, by allowing 2-way operation for the thumb or index finger. It is compatible with all PRO dropper seatposts and is available separately.

PRO Discover Dropper Post Lever
The PRO Discover Dropper Post Lever integrates cleanly with Shimano GRX levers, letting you activate the post from both the hoods (pulling up on the lever), or the drops (pushing down). Our first rides with the setup have been encouraging. Photo: MG

A new lightweight Discover Carbon Post also debuts for 2020 that marks PRO’s first utilization of Dyneema materials in its components. The world’s strongest fiber, Dyneema is able to withstand the demands of demanding gravel racing while simultaneously smoothing out the ride, offering up to 10mm of flex in the seatpost. The 27.2mm version tips the scales at 216g, features 20mm setback and is also available with a 31.6mm diameter.

New PRO Discover Stems (70mm-110mm, 6-degree angle, 1 1/8″ diameter) complete the Discover cockpit lineup, joining the new lightweight road-specific Vibe Carbon Stem (80mm to 130mm) for model year 2020. The Vibe Carbon Stem weighs 120g and features Di2 cable integration options and an evolved puzzle-clamp to give optimum clamping force.

New 2020 Accessories

PRO continues to provide premium grips and handlebar tape for riders’ essential contact points. Gravel riders now get extra padding and grip from PRO with the new Gravel Comfort Tape that is extra grippy for great control in all conditions and comes in an extra long 2,300mm length for close wrapping.

PRO’s new Team CO2 Regulator and Team CO2 Minipump for road or mountain bikes helps riders achieve even higher inflation with drastically reduced effort thanks to new designs. The PRO Team CO2 Regulator’s nozzles have a ‘flip-head’ for compatibility with both Schraeder and Presta valves and the Team CO2 Minipump has a high-volume alloy chamber for air pressure inflation should riders run out of cartridges.
