So here is the thing with drop bars. We have been used to riding bars that are basically round tubes bent into a shape and formed for their intended purpose. Now the reach and sweep and width and drop, etc, may vary, but what you are grabbing with your hands is basically a round tube. And that is both good and bad.

With its massive 30 degree flare and 35 degrees of sweep, the new Discover Big Flare handlebar from PRO Bike Gear is one of the more radical gravel drop bars available today. Guitar Ted and I received early samples for testing, and here are our impressions of the bar after two months of riding.

Now then…the ride quality. It is smoother under sharp impacts than any alloy bar I have used. It is noticeable.

When I get back to riding, I will be moving this to my road bike to get longer miles on it, but so far, as a gravel bike bar, I think it is very, very good and could be a total winner for someone who struggles with hand or wrist issues.

PRO Bike Gear introduced a number of new components and accessories for gravel and all-road bikes today at the Eurobike trade show in Germany. Highlights include a new 27.2mm dropper post, new carbon handlebars and seatposts, and an off-road version of the popular Stealth saddle.

Vibrocore™- If you are searching out every bit of help you can get with vibrations and comfort, then, yes. These bars will do something for you. My feeling is that this benefit is hard to quantify, but one other thing this handle bar has is not hard to figure out. That is its rating for MTB use.

Living up to its name, the Discover Big Flare Bar features 30° degrees of kicked out, drop section goodness. That’s the most flare on a bar that we have tested.

The Flare 25 definitely does have a different feel. The vibrations I felt were……not muted, they were there, but not the same frequency, for sure. Other bars had a “zing” to them, which I could say might affect me negatively, but as for this SPANK bar, I cannot say at this point that it is “better” for me
